HOW LONG HAS SON MISSION BEEN SERVING ORPHANS?Son Mission has been serving orphans with High School education and discipleship since 2016. Through Son Mission, over 50 orphans have received scholarships at Howard Christian High School in Busia, Uganda.
HOW DOES SON MISSION SERVE ORPHANS?Son Ministry seeks orphans who are in P5 from the Primary School’s they teach “All about Jesus” and “Sheep Primer” AND who live in proximity of the Son Mission Hub. They disciple them for three years: P5 through P7. Once they reach P7, we begin the process of finding a Supporter (you) who will provide for his or her High School education. If a supporter is found and the student passes the National Exam, they will enter into High School. If they do not pass the National Exam they will repeat P7 or seek an alternative schooling option such as Son Mission Trades. Once your student is in High School, Son Ministry assigns each orphan a mentor who will meet with them weekly for continued discipleship. We significantly value building God-honoring relationships with each orphan we serve, especially over the course of key developmental years.
IS EDUCATION FREE IN UGANDA?No.
HOW DO WE KNOW IF HE OR SHE IS TRULY AN ORPHAN?Son Ministry does a thorough application process of each orphan and caregiver we serve before you are able to support them. Unfortunately, biological parents have claimed to be “caregivers” so their sons or daughters can receive perks, and NGO’s have claimed to be serving hundreds of orphans when they’re not. We do not support deception. We dig deep into the life of each orphan we serve, with the purpose of serving him or her authentically. Two criteria must be met to allow an orphan to be supported by you: they must be (1) needy (2) a total orphan. (1) Some orphans get adopted into a situation where their family can afford high school without outside help. We make sure there's a financial need. (2) The child is a total orphan who lost both biological parents.
WHAT DOES MY SUPPORT PROVIDE?If your student is projected to board at Howard Christian High School, your support provides the following: educational fee’s for one full year; 3 meals per day for one full year; mattress & 2 bed sheets; bug net; 2 Bibles; school uniform; National Exam fee; and other scholastic materials (i.e. math set, calculator, pens, art book, and paper).
WHY CAN SOME CAREGIVERS AFFORD PRIMARY EDUCATION BUT NOT HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION?The average Primary School in the Busia District costs about 70,000 shillings per year per student (25 USD). The average High School (boarding student) in the Busia District costs about 1,400,000 shillings per year per student (400 USD). Most caregivers who apply for our help earn about 1,000,000 shillings per year (285 USD).
DOES MY SUPPORT GO TOWARD HIS OR HER HEALTHCARE OR SON MISSION’S OPERATIONAL COSTS?No, all Secondary Support goes exclusively toward your specific child’s educational and boarding needs. The caregiver of your child has agreed to help with the healthcare of your child.
DO YOU RECEIVE UPDATES ON YOUR CHILD?Yes, you are mailed a detailed packet. Additionally, we highly recommend you follow Son Mission's newsletter, instagram, and Facebook to stay up to date. You will always be able to mail and email your child whenever you desire. Also, Son Mission plans a yearly trip to Uganda, if you desire to GO, you can meet your student(s) in person.
HOW LONG IS MY COMMITMENT?1 year at a time. We desire for you to commit to the entirety of his or her "O" level High School education, which is 4 years (S1-S4); or Trade School, which is 2 years.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS ACTUALLY ATTENDING HIGH SCHOOL?When your child enters into High School, he or she is assigned a Son Ministry mentor who will meet with your child weekly for continued discipleship and accountability.
WHY IS ONE ORPHAN PROJECTED TO ENROLL AT THE SON MISSION HUB FOR TRADES, WHEREAS ANOTHER IS PROJECTED TO ENROLL AT HOWARD CHRISTIAN?Each orphan has different family dynamics, intellectual abilities, skill sets, and maturity. We consider every aspect of his or her situation when determining his or her next step. For instance, we have had students who struggle with classroom learning and would rather learn a trade such as carpentry, so we eliminated Howard Christian from his or her equation because the Son Mission Hub offers trades.
CAN MY CHILD LOSE HIS OR HER SCHOLARSHIP?Yes. First, your child must meet the standards set by their specific assigned High School. Second, your child must meet the standards set by Son Ministry. If they consistently fail to meet the standards, their scholarship will be revoked. For instance, if your child continually refuses to attend class after multiple warnings, their scholarship will be revoked. Of course, Son Ministry is all about extending grace, mentoring, and working with all students. But ultimately students must adhere to the agreements to maintain their scholarship.
HOW DO THE PAYMENTS WORK?480.00 yearly or 40.00 per month for students enrolling at Howard Christian High School.
or 325.00 yearly or 27.00 per month for students enrolling at the Son Mission Hub for Trades. HOW DOES MY MONEY REACH THE BUSIA DISTRICT?Son Mission goes to Uganda yearly to transfer funds, encourage, etc. We transport your student to school and pay for his or her school fees in person (along with bug nets, mattress, suitcase, etc.).
or Son Mission uses Transferwise (Wise) to wire funds directly from Son Mission (WaFed) to Son Ministry (Stanbic). The Son Ministry team pays for their school fees (in-person). WHAT IS THE END-GOAL?The end-goal of “orphan support” is not simply to get orphans into the highest level of education. The goal is to position orphans to thrive during critical developmental years (13-20) with discipleship, structure and foundational education (S1-S4). In essence, we position orphans to know, love and follow Jesus AND springboard their education. After orphans have gone through 4 years of discipleship classes, trainings at the Hub, and formal education: we have done our part, in partnership, to position them to become sustainable Christ-like adults.
